At Gary's memorial service, a good friend delivered the eulogy he had written honoring Gary. He did a great job capturing the spirit of our dear friend. I know from experience, however, that it is a lot easier to write a great eulogy when the departed was such a good person, who shared that goodness with a lot of people over his lifetime. I know it is easier to write when eulogizing a man who was quite a character, loaded with character. This was Gary.
The last thought in his friend's eulogy was that when he spent time with Gary he was at his very best. This rang true with me as well. The times I spent with Gary I became my very best self. He brought that out in people. It is a rare and priceless gift that I don't want to examine or attempt to demystify. It was who Gary was. How very lucky we were to be his friends. How very sad he is gone from our lives.
